See what happened when people met Jesus.

Central truth · Meet

John presents selected signs so readers may believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and receive life in His name.

Near the end of his Gospel, John steps back and explains what he has been doing. Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that were not included in the book. The written account is selective.

Then John states his purpose: these signs were written so that readers may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing they may have life in His name.

A Presented Case, Not a Random Collection.

John’s Gospel is not a diary containing everything Jesus did. It is an ordered witness. The author selects signs, conversations, claims, conflicts, and responses because together they support a conclusion about Jesus’ identity.

This does not make the account dishonest. Every historical work selects from more events than it can record. The important questions are whether the testimony is truthful, whether the selected events support the conclusion, and whether competing explanations account for the evidence better.

Signs Point Beyond Themselves.

John calls many of Jesus’ works “signs.” A sign is significant not merely because it is extraordinary, but because it points. Water becomes wine. A royal official’s son is healed. A disabled man rises. Thousands are fed. A man born blind sees. Lazarus leaves his tomb. Each event raises the question of who Jesus is.

The signs are not spiritual entertainment. They disclose glory, authority, compassion, and identity. They also produce division. Some believe. Some investigate. Some resist even when the evidence becomes difficult to deny.

The Intended Conclusion.

John names two connected titles: the Christ and the Son of God. Jesus is presented as the promised Messiah, but not as a merely political liberator. His sonship and relationship with the Father run throughout the Gospel.

John is transparent about where he believes the evidence leads. Readers are free to examine the witness, but they should not pretend the Gospel aims only to inspire moral reflection.

Life in His Name.

The purpose is not conclusion alone. John connects belief in Jesus with life. Throughout the Gospel, life is found in the Son, given by the Son, and secured through His death and resurrection.

The question is therefore both historical and personal: Who is Jesus, and is the life He promises truly found in Him?

Pense nisto.

Do you read the Gospel merely for information, or are you willing to consider the conclusion its evidence is designed to support?

Responda.

Read John 20:30–31 as the author’s stated purpose, then begin weighing the Gospel according to that purpose.

What This Means for Your Life.

John is not asking you to treat the Gospel of John as a random set of inspiring stories. He is saying the signs were written for a purpose: to show who Jesus is and to invite a real response. If Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God, then He is not just one more teacher to admire; He is someone you must reckon with.

That matters whether you already believe, are unsure, or are still skeptical. The Gospel does not ask you to ignore evidence or to pretend every explanation is equal. It asks you to read carefully and consider whether the signs point to Jesus as John says they do. And if they do, belief is not merely agreeing with a fact; it is trusting the One who gives life in His name.

One way to respond today is to read John 20:30–31 slowly and then continue through the Gospel with one question in mind: What does this passage suggest about Jesus’ identity, and what response does that call for from me?

Reflection question: Am I approaching Jesus mainly to learn about Him, or am I willing to let His claims change how I live?
