Matthew 7:24–29
Step 1 of 5
See what happened when people met Jesus.
The Sermon on the Mount ends with astonishment.
Watch: Authority Unlike the Scribes.
Watch the companion video, then continue reading to examine the biblical testimony in its full context.
The crowds had heard Jesus speak about anger, lust, truthfulness, enemies, prayer, money, anxiety, judgment, and the way into God’s kingdom. Matthew tells us they were amazed because He taught “as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.”
More Than an Interpreter.
Teachers commonly grounded their instruction in recognized authorities. Jesus certainly affirmed Scripture, but throughout the sermon He repeatedly spoke with striking directness: “But I say to you.”
He did not merely offer one possible spiritual perspective. He described who is blessed, exposed the intentions of the heart, defined authentic righteousness, warned of final judgment, and declared who would enter the kingdom of heaven.
Then He placed His own words at the foundation of human life.
The Authority to Judge the Foundation.
Jesus said that everyone who hears His words and does them is like a wise man building on rock. The person who hears and refuses them is like a foolish man building on sand.
Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not say, “Here are some principles that may improve your life.” He presents obedience to His words as the distinction between a life that survives the final storm and one that collapses completely.
No ordinary moral instructor can responsibly place his teaching in that position. Jesus speaks as the One whose verdict defines wisdom and whose word determines whether the foundation holds.
Admiration Without Obedience.
The two builders both hear. The difference is not access to information. One acts; the other does not.
That makes religious familiarity dangerous when it produces no obedience. A person can quote Jesus, admire the beauty of the sermon, agree with selected values, and remain on sand.
Jesus’ authority does not allow us to compliment His words while reserving the right to ignore them.
The crowd recognized that something unprecedented stood before them. As this journey continues, we will ask why Jesus speaks this way. For today, feel the weight of the claim: He places His words where only the word of the final Lord and Judge can stand.
Pense nisto.
Do you approach Jesus as a commentator whose ideas you may evaluate—or as the One with authority to evaluate you?
Responda.
Identify one saying of Jesus you have admired without obeying. Ask what taking Him seriously would require.
What This Means for Your Life.
Jesus does not invite you to treat His words as religious advice to file away and revisit later. In Matthew 7:24–29, He speaks as One whose teaching stands on the line between a life that holds and a life that collapses. That means the real issue is not whether you find Jesus impressive, but whether you will let His words judge your choices, motives, and direction.
One way to respond today is to name one saying of Jesus you respect but have not yet acted on—perhaps about honesty, forgiveness, anger, purity, prayer, or loving your enemies. Then ask what obedience would actually look like in a normal setting: at home, at school, at work, or among friends. You do not earn God’s favor by trying harder; rather, taking Jesus seriously is part of responding to His authority and grace.
Reflection question: Where have you been hearing Jesus without really building your life on what He says?
