Read the exact words Jesus said.

Central truth · Listen

Jesus addresses the desires that bring people toward Him and redirects seekers from curiosity into abiding encounter.

Two disciples begin following Jesus. He turns, sees them, and asks, “What are you seeking?”

It is a striking opening. Jesus does not begin by asking whether they understand His identity or possess correct terminology. He asks what they want.

Desire Shapes the Search.

No one approaches Jesus as a completely neutral observer. We bring hopes, fears, loyalties, wounds, ambitions, and expectations. Those desires affect what we notice and what we resist.

Some wanted Jesus to provide bread. Some wanted a sign. Some wanted healing. Some wanted an argument that could be used against Him. Some wanted positions of honor. Others came burdened by guilt or desperate for mercy.

The question is not whether you have motives. The question is whether you will allow Jesus to expose and reorder them.

When We Want the Gift More Than the Giver.

It is possible to seek Jesus as a means to another end. We may want success, safety, social acceptance, emotional relief, intellectual victory, or protection from consequences. We may want Him to strengthen a life whose direction we have already chosen.

Jesus often responds with something deeper than the request brought to Him. He addresses sin when people ask only for physical relief. He calls for surrender when someone asks for eternal life. He offers Himself when crowds want bread.

A Jesus who exists only to validate our plans is not the Jesus of the Gospels.

Where Are You Staying?

The disciples answer by asking where Jesus is staying. Their question may sound ordinary, but it opens the possibility of time with Him. They do not demand an immediate performance. They want to remain.

Jesus says, “Come and you will see.” They go and spend the day with Him. Their search becomes relationship and attention.

Seek Jesus Himself.

What are you seeking through this journey? A stronger argument? A devotional routine? Material for teaching others? Relief from uncertainty? Those aims may have a place, but they are not large enough to be the center.

The central gift of the Gospel is not a technique supplied by Jesus. It is reconciliation with God through Jesus and life in Him.

Bring your real desires into the light. Then remain long enough for Jesus to show you what you truly need.

A Question to Carry Forward.

Return to Jesus’ question whenever the journey becomes uncomfortable. If a passage challenges a cherished belief, ask what you are seeking. If you feel impatient because Jesus does not provide the answer you wanted, ask again. The question is not designed to shame sincere desire. It protects the search from becoming a disguised demand that Jesus serve purposes we refuse to surrender.

Pense nisto.

What do you most want Jesus to give you—and would you still want Him if He challenged that desire?

Responda.

Tell God honestly what you are seeking. Ask for a desire to know Jesus Himself, not merely to use Him for another goal.

What This Means for Your Life.

Jesus’ question, “What are you seeking?” reaches past surface curiosity and into the real reasons people come to Him. You may be looking for relief, clarity, proof, approval, or a way to make life less painful. Jesus does not pretend those desires are unreal. But He also does not let them stay in charge. He invites you to see whether you want His gifts more than you want Him.

That matters because the Gospel is bigger than getting immediate help. In John 1:35–42, the disciples do not just collect information about Jesus; they spend time with Him. Their search moves from interest to encounter. For readers who are unsure about faith, that is a good place to begin: not by pretending you have no questions, but by honestly asking whether you are willing to let Jesus reshape what you want.

One way to respond today is to name, in a simple sentence or two, what you most want from Jesus right now. Then ask whether that desire would still make sense if He challenged it or asked for your trust instead of your control.

Reflection question: What are you seeking from Jesus—and are you ready to let Him show you what you truly need?
